Unlike other scholarships, the Melbourne University Graduate Research Scholarships don’t have an application fee or a lengthy, separate procedure. There are 600 scholarship awards available in total for graduate students. Because the University of Melbourne selects many international students for this scholarship in Australia nearly every year, all international students are strongly encouraged to apply.

The following are the benefits of Melbourne University Scholarships:
Stipend and Fee Offset Scholarships
- Full tuition may be waived for up to four years for doctoral students and for up to two years for master’s by research students.
- Depending on the length of the program, students seeking a Master by Research or doctoral degree are given a living stipend of $34,400 per year pro rata for up to two or 3.5 years.
- The living allowance is subject to annual indexing and includes a limited amount of paid parental, maternity, and sick leave.
- A $3,000 scholarship will be given to students going from outside of Australia, and a $2,000 relocation award will be given to students moving from other States or Territories than Victoria.
- For international students who need a student visa to study in Australia, Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) Single Membership is available.
Scholarships for Fees Offset
Full fee waivers are available to doctoral students for a maximum of four years, or to Master’s by Research students for a maximum of two years.

Three different kinds of students may apply for the Melbourne University Scholarships
New Learners
If you are a new student and have applied for a graduate research course before the deadline, you will be automatically eligible for the Graduate Research Scholarships. We will notify you that a scholarship application has been added to your file within ten business days of your course application being submitted.
Students who have agreed to a postponed start date for a graduate research course
If you accepted an offer for a graduate research course and deferred graduation to have your scholarship application considered, you will need to apply online by October 31 to be eligible for a Graduate Research Scholarship the following year. Ten business days after completing the online application, you will receive a notification stating that your scholarship application has been added to your file.
Currently Enrolled Students
To be considered for a scholarship for the following year’s program, if you are enrolled in a graduate research course, you must complete an online application by October 31. You will receive notification that your application has been added to your file within ten business days of submitting the online application. Register for a Course
Decide which graduate research program you wish to apply to. There are a number of options:
Doctor of Philosophy: You will spend up to four years conducting original research on a specific topic and writing an 80,000-word thesis. Some of our PhD programs feature taught courses during the first year.
Doctorate by Research: This program offers coursework in addition to meetings for your research, offering high-level engagement with the important literature in your research area.
For the Master of Philosophy (MPhil), a globally recognized master’s program by research, a thesis of 30,000–40,000 words must be finished.
Timeline to Apply for the Melbourne University Scholarships
Students can apply for Graduate Research at any time of the year because it is an open application process. However, you must submit your course application by the deadlines if you wish to be eligible for faculty-based grants or graduate research funds. In that round, admission and scholarship consideration will only be given to completed applications that are submitted on time.
Deadline
You have until October 31 of the academic year for which you received the scholarship offer to start your studies if you are granted one. If not, your scholarship can be taken away. Since the majority of scholarships are awarded in the first two rounds, it is important to submit your application by the appropriate dates to increase your chances of receiving money.
