Every year, the SBW Berlin Scholarship is given to young people from all over the world who come from low-income homes and wish to apply the skills they acquired in Germany to support long-term, nonprofit projects, ideally back home.
Based on a student’s academic background, individual potential, and social requirements, SBW grants bachelor’s and master’s degrees at universities and special institutions of applied sciences in Berlin and Potsdam. Generally speaking, all artistic and scientific fields are eligible for sponsorship.
After successfully finishing their studies, scholarship winners are expected to return home to continue working on their projects and apply the information and skills they acquired in Berlin.

Who can apply for the SBW Berlin Scholarship?
- Foreign nationals that seem to have a special need for development aid in their native nations
- Foreigners without homes
- Acknowledged refugees
- Those who possess a settlement permit
- Those who possess a long-term EU residency permit
- Before beginning their studies, students from EU and EEA nations who had previously worked in Germany in a similar capacity
- Under the Freedom of Movement Act (Freizügigkeitsgesetz EU), students from EU/EEA nations who have a permanent right of residency
Application Requirements
To be eligible for the SBW Berlin Scholarship, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:
- between the ages of 18 and 30 with volunteer or professional experience in the nonprofit sector, a strong desire to work for at least 18 months in their home country following graduation, and the ability to demonstrate a relatively modest net income
- able to demonstrate that they have no first-degree relatives who live continuously in Germany and a comparatively modest net income
- The scholarship recipient must return to their home country and work for at least 18 months after completing the study program if they can demonstrate that they were not in Germany for more than 18 months prior to the application, that their average grades corresponded to a German grade point average of at least 2.0, or that they were fully enrolled in the first, second, or maximum third semester at a state-recognized university (in Germany or abroad) or that they applied for a master’s degree shortly before or after receiving a bachelor’s degree.
Language Requirement
Speaking German is not necessary for applicants. But they have to speak English well. Candidates must fulfill the language requirements of a particular program or university in Berlin or Potsdam in order to pursue a bachelor’s or master’s degree. An authentic language certificate is only needed during the verification process. Official language certificates (in German or English) will only be needed from candidates who have been invited to a face-to-face interview or videoconference and have successfully completed the interview.
Application Timeline
Only between May 15 and June 30 and November 15 and December 31 may application materials for the SBW Berlin Scholarship be submitted.
Documents Required for SBW Berlin Scholarship
Applications will only be taken into consideration if they are complete. The following paperwork is required of applicants for the SBW Berlin Scholarship:
- application form (online or fillable PDF)
- Motivational letter (one or two pages)
- A copy of the most recent academic degree, including the grade point average and grading scale, a copy of the previous school or university transcript, including the grade point average and grading scale, and current curriculum vitae with information on the net household income
- The only times that application materials are accepted each year are on November 15th, December 31st, May 15th, and June 30th.
